Intellectual Outputs - JOURNEY MAP

Intellectual Output 1

Building a European platform and network

To promote and implement a sport diplomacy strategy at the European Union (EU) level, it is necessary to initiate long-lasting dialogues with relevant stakeholders (academics, politicians, sports organisations, athletes, etc.) through the creation of a network. This platform, aimed at bringing the network together, gathers all relevant documentation surrounding the project in order to communicate regularly on our activities and leave a long-term impact in the field. Intellectual Output 2

Desk research on sport diplomacy

The very concept of “sport diplomacy” is often subject to debate as its definition remains blurry. The goal of this desk research is to explore sport diplomacy critically and analytically, as well as its surrounding concepts (e.g., public diplomacy, cultural diplomacy). This will be done through a literature review and reports on relevant case studies of sport diplomacy at the national and regional levels. Research findings can be found here:

Intellectual Output 3

Development of an EU sport diplomacy

Building on the conclusions drawn from the desk research on sport diplomacy, this new module is interested in sport diplomacy initiatives taken at the European Union level. More broadly, it looks at the EU as a global actor in the field of sport diplomacy in order to assess its strengths and weaknesses. Final conclusions can be found here:

Intellectual Output 4

Mapping and analysis of national sport diplomacies

The hypothesis that we can build a common EU sport diplomacy from existing policies found within the EU is foundational to the project. By crafting 27 reports on each EU national sport diplomacy, which will be analysed and compared building on previous research conducted in the project, this large-scale study provides a clear analysis on the current state of sport diplomacy throughout the region and proposes to use identified good practices as foundations for policies at the EU-level. You can find the reports here:

Intellectual Output 5

Recommendations

Thanks to the four previous intellectual outputs, it is now possible to draft concrete policy recommendations for the strategic implementation of an EU sport diplomacy. Recommendations are to be drafted, discussed between various stakeholders; and widely disseminated across our network. You can find the final recommendations here:
